Radioworld & The Woodbine Beach Hunt

On June 3rd Radioworld held its annual Metal Detecting event at Woodbine beach in Toronto Ontario.

Now I attended this event for the sole purpose that I would be able to meet some fellow detectorists that I’ve been following and chatting with over social media and YouTube for the past year. I also thought it would be a good opportunity to network with vendors and see about the possibility of a club sponsorship? But also I just wanted to see what other clubs do for seeded hunts so our club could get some ideas.

The day started out like any other. Although I did have to book 2 days off work to attend this event. I woke up on Friday the 2nd of June to get my son ready for daycare, this means wake him up, get him bathed, dressed, make breakfast, Which today was an omelet, fruit, yogurt, and a drink, Clean up & do the dishes, get a diaper bag ready, and get myself ready for the day as well, get little man changed before we leave one last time, and get him into the car and delivered to grandma Noni before 8AM.

Now most days I can get this all done within about an hour to 1:20hrs if I plan the night before. If I don’t plan the. This can take several to 3 hours some days lol. Now because I was heading into the city I think I got it done in record time lol.

Last year I had stopped in Oshawa at a public beach where I had spent several hours and found what was still my oldest coin find to this day, A 1865 Mexican token.

so I thought I would make another stop and search this beach again for a few hours before going into downtown Toronto on a Friday evening.

Unfortunately I missed the exit for this beach and decided to hit up a different beach instead. I went to a small beach right beside the Whitby Yacht Club. A kind of last minute decision.

I got to this beach around 10:15 AM after a quick stop along the way for a bite to eat and set up my gear for a mid morning beach hunt. Last time I was in the area, I was using my Minelab Equinox 600 and this time even though I brought my Equinox, I was determined to see if the Legend could work it’s magic and find me some goodies.

It wasn’t long before I got my first signal. And several others to follow. I was digging so much trash off the beach. I made a few slight settings adjustments and started combing the beach again. I don’t need to write a book length post to say that other than a few modern day pieces of Canadian clad. I really didn’t find much on this beach. But I did dig a crap load of garbage. ( bottle caps, pull tabs and iron) which I had to stop and discard of at a nearby park.

Well it was onwards to stay with my sister and family for the night to get ready for the Radioworld metal detecting event which was Sponsored solely by Nokta Makro technologies

Ok I was up early on the 3rd and out the door before any of my sisters family was awake. I went to have breakfast and then arrived to the event with time to spare.

I was able to meet with some very interesting folks. Everyone had loads of stories to share. It wasn’t long and the events hadn’t even started before I was able to meet Dalit (the Nokta head of sales world wide) and Jack Summers, (owner of Radioworld) they both seemed extremely nice folks.

Ok, at around 10AM, the events got underway the first event was for all participants. Men, women and children were all allowed to participate.

As the buzzer went off and everyone started detecting I was swinging my coil like a mad man. Listening for the slightest beers on the legend. I was digging coins left right and centre. I was not paying attention to anything going on around me other than my machine and the bee bing noises it was making. I turned into a coin finding machine.

I heard a beep. I pinpointed on the legend. I dug a scoop with my #CKG sand scoop, swung back over the hole to make sure I did Infact get the item, if no noise on the detector I would continue searching the area for more and at the same time shake the sand scoop to get the sand out and reveal the coin and with my first step over the hole I just dug, I would sweep my foot behind me covering the hole and fill it in with sand. It was a great system I had going.

Gail and I

SEOMDCLUB member (Gail) was just getting used to her machine (the equinox 800) and did fairly well with a few coins in the first half hour hunt, however my technique was crushing it with over 20 coins found in 30 minutes after the first 4 minutes of each of the hunts then the field got much harder to detect. There were 138 detectorists in the field on each hunt so the coins disappeared quickly lol.

Just a quick pic I took during one of the hunts

After each of the hunts, everyone would gather back at the gazebo and empty their pouches of any trash, and turn in some speciality coins for special prizes. After the first 2 hunts it was time for lunch . Supplied by Radioworld I had 2 hotdogs, chips, and water. Sat with a few folks I did not know, and had a great time.

(Quote by Pop-can Dan) “After the last hunt it was time for closing ceremonies This was by far my favorite part of this Radioworld Woodbine event. Jack Summers and crew outdid themselves AGAIN. NOKTA really Nokta’d it out of the park. Their generosity was like nothing I’d ever seen. Jack did not let even one child leave without a winning a brand new metal detector. I was fortunate to witness this act of kindness today. Still some good people left in this world. It was all the small acts of kindness that went unseen that was the real treasure today.”

Detectors on the prize table

I may self came away with some amazing foreign coins, some in the 1800’s, that alone is treasure enough, however Jack and his crew also made sure every person in attendance came away with at least 1 door prize as well. So I ended up with almost 100 coins dug, 53 of those were silver pieces, a beer box Baseball World Series replica ring, 3 new Nokta finds bags (approx $40 each), a new detecting accessories kit ($80 value), a shirt & hat, a Nokta winter toque, and a few people I will now keep in contact with. This was a great event for sure, and I will definitely be doing it again.

Some of my finds
Gail’s finds one of those gawdy rings were actually a 925 ring
